1. Choose the format

Most groups use rotating partners (a “mixer”): new partner every round, great for socials. If levels are very mixed, try Up & Down the River. Teams that signed up together play fixed teams. See all options in our guide to round robin formats.

2. Plan courts, players and time

Rule of thumb: 12–15 minutes per round with games to 11 (win by 2). If time is tight, play games to 9, or use timed games of 10 minutes.

3. Make the schedule

Enter the number of players and courts in the free round robin generator. It spreads sit-outs evenly and avoids repeating partners. Add names, then print it or share it on your phone. Prefer paper? Use a printable chart for 4 to 16 players.

Tired of headcounts and chasing payments? We’re building Pickle Captain Events: players sign up and pay from one link, check in with a QR code and the round robin builds itself. Join the early-access list.

4. On the day

  1. Check in: give each player a number (a sticker or marker on the hand works).
  2. Brief the rules (1 minute): game length, who serves first, where scores are reported.
  3. Post the schedule on the fence or a clipboard at each court, or share the link.
  4. Start every round together with a whistle or a call, so courts stay in sync.
  5. Use sit-outs well: the players resting can referee or record scores.

5. Keep score and standings

Each team writes its score on the sheet after the game. Rank players by wins, then by point differential (points won minus points lost). In Up & Down the River, only wins matter; the generator keeps the standings for you.

6. Handle the usual problems

  • Odd number of players: no problem. One or more players sit out each round in turn.
  • Someone arrives late: regenerate the schedule from the next round with the new number of players.
  • Someone leaves early: the player sitting out that round takes their place.
  • Uneven levels: switch to Up & Down the River or split into two groups by level.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a pickleball round robin take?

About 12–15 minutes per round with games to 11. Most groups play 7–8 rounds in a 2-hour session.

How many players do you need for a round robin?

At least 4 for doubles. With 2 courts, 8 players means nobody sits out; 9 or 10 players means 1 or 2 sit out each round.

How do you score a pickleball round robin?

The simplest way is to count wins per player, using point differential to break ties. Some groups add up all the points each player scores.

Can I run a round robin without the internet at the court?

Yes. Print the schedule or one of our printable charts before you go.
